Jairus is a man of great faith who went to extraodrinary lengths to have his daughter receive ministry from Jesus. In the process he suffered disappointment, & despair but nothing would deter him from his objective. The greatest gift a Dad can give to his children is to introduce them to Jesus Christ.

In a round hole.  No matter which idol we choose, it never quite fills us, yet how do we even know what is blocking our deeper intimacy with God?

We find ourselves in the world not sure of who we are, but desperate to know.  And so we create an identity for ourselves, and begin to idolise those things on which our identity is built.  But we don't even understand ourselves, and no identity that we make for ourselves can ever do us justice.  Only God knows us well enough to give us a true name

Aesop's fable paints two types of people.  Some people are grasshoppers, idolising comfort at the cost of responsibility.  And some are ants, working hard now in order to secure comfort later on.  But both idolise comfort.  The rich young ruler is the ultimate ant!  God calls us to be neither ants nor grasshoppers, but birds of the air -- Matthew 6.

It's a longing of our hearts -- to find something big enough and True enough to give our lives in service of it.  And sometimes we think we've found it.  But God is the ultimate Truth and the ultimate Beauty, and only he is big enough for a whole life.
