In 2007, a group of around 41 members and friends of Northside travelled to Kampala, Uganda to build a large kitchen for the orphans and widows who live in Watoto's Suubi village.
“Watoto” means “the children” and since 1994 Watoto Child Care Ministries has responded to the critical AIDS crisis in Uganda. Watoto is impacting the lives of more than 1,200 orphans by providing physical, emotional, educational and spiritual care to Uganda’s most vulnerable children.
Watoto exists to raise the next generation of Ugandan leaders
by discipling parentless children for Christ.
This assistance is provided by placing children in a family environment rather than institutional orphanages. Children between the age of 2 and 12 are accepted into the programme and remain part of their new family for life.
Volunteers build houses, which become home to eight children and a “house mother”. These homes are built in clusters, which become Watoto Children’s Villages with primary schools, water projects, a medical clinic and a multi-purpose hall.
